My name is Melanie Tapson and my superpower is voice therapy!

My training and experience working with the voice is both broad and deep, spanning almost 30 years across careers as a professional singer, a Singing Voice Specialist voice teacher, a voice educator, and a registered speech language pathologist. I love taking a holistic approach to voice optimization; knowing that a person's voice is part of them, their whole body, and is shaped by their experiences in this world – as well as what they need to communicate. Together, alongside a widespread and diverse team, we dig deep into what’s keeping a voice from being in effortless balance, or preventing someone from really sharing their most authentic self, and help restore their vocal power – right away.

THE POWER OF VOICE

Voice has been my life's work in so many different ways. But the other thing I love most in this world is bringing amazing people together!  The Power Of Voice is the perfect mashup of brilliant voice enthusiasts (this incredible roster of talent and YOU, fellow voice geek) across the vocal universe.  It's a celebration in a time when things have felt pretty bleak, and it's an opportunity to come together in an isolated world.

It's also an opportunity to give back. By providing high quality continuing education, featuring an incredibly diverse range of perspectives (including voices that we don't often have the privilege of learning from), offering free sessions, donating a share of the proceeds, and offering subsidies to encourage diversity in participation, too, we're making room at the table for everyone who wants to build a community around the power of voice.

I truly hope you enjoy learning, growing, celebrating, sharing, and connecting with one another around our mutual passion:  voice.

Emma Laishram, assistant producer to the Power of Voice is a Manipuri-Canadian singer, actor and prospective SLP student. This is Emma's second year with the Power of Voice and she could not be more excited!!

Emma is currently a Linguistics student at Glendon/York University, she holds a BA Theatre (Dalhousie), and has had the incredible fortune to intern with Melanie Tapson Voice Care since 2020 and is eagerly awaiting the results of her SLP grad school applications. With a background in theatre producing, playwriting and 10+ years of professional voice and performance experience, she is also a proud children's author and illustrator of 'Do You Know How Loved You Are' (2020) and released an EP of songs in 2019 entitled 'Beyond Borders' (available on Spotify). Her love for language, and the technique and craft involved with singing and voice work, as well as her passion for the celebration of cultural diversity ultimately led her to the study of linguistics and speech science. She has always found language and the ways in which we communicate and interpret language fascinating and at the heart of how we connect with one another.

This year Emma is thrilled to be facilitating a special feature conversation titled The POV of POC: Power of Colour.
